The average man doesn’t wish to be told that it is a bull or bear market. What he desires is to be told specifically which stock to buy or sell. He wants to get something for nothing. He does not wish to work. He doesn’t even wish to have to think.
- Jesse Livermore
You might notice that our site looks and reads a little differently than the traditional investment newsletter. This cottage industry is filled with writers who make a living publishing investment commentary or trading recommendations. We’re sure you’re familiar with some of them. Some are charlatans. Some are a little creepy, cleverly engineered to make your mouth water with greed at the prospect of quick, easy riches. And some are just plain weird.
But who are we to judge? The founders of those letters make a ton of money off their subscribers. It’s a great business for them, even if their advice stinks. The inside joke in the industry is that the best way to make money off an investment newsletter is not to subscribe to one, but to write one! The joke is funny because it’s true.
We’re different.
Our mission is to provide you with thoughtful investment commentary that’s hopefully a pleasure to read. It is not geared solely for experienced investors, but rather any intelligent reader.
We aim to deliver clear and direct thoughts on the markets and give you a web experience to match. We think about things in different ways and the perspectives that we offer may not be what you’re used to hearing. We’re not going to tell you exactly what to buy and what to sell because investing is hard work, and investors that work hard are typically the ones that are rewarded. Our goal is to assist you with this work, to help you build a framework on which you can make prudent investment decisions.
If that prospect excites you, sign up for our weekly letter. It’s free.
Over twenty years of fund management has taught us that nothing is more important to long-term survival than product quality, and it’s imperative to us that this newsletter adhere to the same high standards. We’ve endured bear markets and bull markets, and times both lean and prosperous, but we’ve never wavered from our commitment to product quality. And we are convinced it’s the reason our business is still growing today. Call us naïve if you want, or label us idealists. But surviving for as long we have in the financial industry is no easy task, and we chalk it up to doing right by our clients, treating them with honesty, and giving them products that we, ourselves, want to purchase (and always do). Frequently we are asked by youngsters and new graduates about how to make it in this industry, and we give them that exact bit of advice.
So why do we do this? Why publish a free newsletter?
In short, we know a lot of people. We have hundreds of clients all around the world but many of them live right here in Northern Nevada. They’re our family and extended family, our friends, neighbors, and the companies we do business with. They’re our golf & fishing buddies, the local charities we support, our former classmates, fellow churchmates, and comrades in the PTA. They’re folks that share our passion for the Nevada way of life.
Frequently, when we chat with them, they ask us what we think about this stock and that commodity, if we think their idea makes for a good investment, or about which direction we think the economy is headed. We love talking about this stuff and it’s always a fascinating conversation.
This newsletter is simply a way to have that conversation with a lot of you at once. We’re happy to hear your feedback, too.
We hope you find what we have to say valuable. At the very least, we hope you find it interesting. And if so, we encourage you to share it with your friends.
